| | Honor Slingo 1925 - 2010 At our Burns Night Dinner on 23rd January 2010 we paid tribute to Honor Slingo, who has been a faithful supporter of many events over the years at the George & Dragon, the Norway Inn and in recent years the Jubilee Inn. Honor will be fondly remembered. Here is a copy of our tribute to Honor that you will find absorbing. | |
Honor Slingo Tribute 26th January 2010 - St Margaret's Church Topsham
How do you talk about a lovely lady’s life that spanned ¾ of the 20th century and more, in such a short space of time? Here goes.
Honor was an only daughter and born in Dorchester in the west country, in 1925, and it was to the west country she happily returned.
When as a child, her family moved away to Kennington in London and as an only daughter, her father took her along to the cricket at the Surrey Oval when she was just aged 8. These trips influenced her life and led to a passion for cricket. I remember her telling me in “those” days children had to be silent. Seen but not heard.
One of her most famous claims to fame was at the test match at the Oval in August 1938 when Australia and England were playing for the Ashes. It was a rare treat as a certain Sir Len Hutton scored 364 runs, helping England amass 903 and win the match by an innings and 579 runs.
Unfortunately we could only draw the series having previously drawn two tests, losing another with the Old Trafford Test having been abandoned without a ball being played. Hence Australia retained the ashes which they kept until after the war. Never the less it was a great test match. Honor even kept her hand written score card all these years.
It also led to a great affection for the Antipodes and in particular Australia. So much so that her first real job was at Australia House in the Strand. This was now WW2 with the inconvenience of rationing and the blitz. Oh how much my generation owes Honor’s generation for our freedom.
By pure coincidence in 1788 the first convict landed in Botany Bay – the date – 26th January – today is Australia Day
At last VE Day arrived and what celebrations there must have been. At Buckingham Palace a young Princess Elizabeth and her sister was safely sneaked outside the palace gates to witness the joy. Not far away was Miss Honor Palmer and a dashing Gordon Peter Slingo on their first date. Gordon knew how to spoil a girl. It was war time and I recall her saying once that all they could get that day were plain ham sandwiches.
I’m so glad they met because we may never have had their beloved daughters Dianne, Sylvia and my dear wife Carole – the baby of the trio. Not to mention the wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren Honor was so equally proud of and adored.
So it was post war Britain, an era of opportunity but hard work. Gordon studied many years for his Architects Certificate and went onto to become a highly respected member of his profession, ultimately becoming Chief Architect for Taylor Woodrow International and a Freeman of the City of London. Something I know would never have been possible without a loving and supportive wife.
As time went on they secured a plot of land in Ralliwood Ashtead Surrey where they built the home where the three little maids grew up. Eventually they grew up all too fast and as slightly hormonal young ladies one by one the glass doors shattered as they were slammed. But steering a straight course, Honor was there to instil in her daughters a good ration of common sense.
Gordon kept busy but so too did Honor and when she wasn’t involved in PTA work at St Andrews School, she formed her long and loyal association with the Ashtead WI. Even in recent years in Ashtead, she was organising their weeks away.
Sadly Gordon passed away before I knew him but I know he was just like my own dad, working all the hours that God sent and giving everything up to raise his family in a happy era.
Ralliwood became too big and Honor moved to a more manageable home in Ashtead in 1994. But it was a dream of both Gordon and Honors’ to one day move to Devon. And despite the years rolling by, Honor was determined to fulfil this ambition. So in 2001 she uprooted and moved back to her family’s original roots in Topsham. Honor’s grandfather is buried at Clyst St George. Indeed, he carved the original church pews which were bombed in the war.
This was a happy era too and she soon made many friends with the local WI, Topsham Museum, Devon Air Ambulance, the Estuary League of Friends, the Swimming Pool and more. Here she enjoyed Topsham’s unique friendly and helpful village atmosphere. Something we have also benefited from in the wonderful help we have received for this occasion. Thank you all.
Meanwhile her love for life and for cricket had been seamless. Denis Compton was always her special hero, and she was delighted to be invited to attend his memorial service in Westminster Abbey - even postponing an operation to participate. Not satisfied with Lords and the Oval, Honor joined the Gent party to Australia in 1994/5 where she witnessed the birth of the barmy army at the SCG. Even as a lone traveller Honor took herself off to New Zealand to follow England in March 2002 when she was in her mid 70’s. But that visit wasn’t without incident even at Heathrow Departures. Honor couldn’t quite understand why BA wouldn’t let her travel all the way around the world on an out of date passport! Luckily Dianne saved the day and 24 hours later Honor was despatched – with an emergency passport – having queued many hours in the London Passport Office and paid a small fortune. Dianne was eventually quite cool about it though – however matricide did get mentioned at one stage!
A year or so earlier we nearly succeeded when Carole and I were running the George & Dragon at Ightham, Kent. The bedroom in this lovely Tudor inn, where we’d put her had a very sticky lock and poor Honor couldn’t quite open it. We’d forgotten all about Honor until very late that morning, by which time she was so desperate for the loo, she nearly climbed out of the upstairs window to escape via the top of the Sevenoaks double - decker bus as it luckily stopped by our door. What a vision – poor Honor straddling the Green Line omnibus as it careered through Kent’s country lanes – busting for a wee.
What a fantastic mother, grandmother and great grandmother she was; Immensely proud of all of her family and generous to a fault, including her time. How she managed it all with her many charitable commitments who knows! She even found time to post us clippings from her beloved Western Morning News that caught her eye. Sylvia would be sent clips about Salcombe, a favourite holiday destination of hers, and anything about dancing or her favourite music. Chris would get anything about trains or birds that had landed or nested in Devon and Carole and I would get anything about Cornish pubs and the St Austell Brewery. Articles on trains in Cornwall would sometimes require an extra copy!
But don’t underestimate this gentile English matriarch. Like Agatha Chritsie’s Jane Marple, behind the veneer of a comfortable cardigan and lavender, was a woman of steel and determination.
Soon after I was privileged to become part of the Slingo dynasty, Carole told me how when granddaughter Lisa was a tiny baby, Honor was gravely concerned about how unwell Lisa was. Faced with a surgery receptionist that was going to put Honor at the back of the queue at best, Honor summoned all her height and assertiveness and “demanded” she saw Dr Williams “this instant”. It worked and she did. Just as well as poor Lisa had meningitis, and we nearly lost her, but for Honor and her truly British grit!
So as my humble time at this crease runs out, It is with great privilege and humility that the family have allowed me to say these few words. Honor literally loved all her family, she loved everybody. And by her passing, she will be missed, but we will all cherish our special memories of a lovely lady.
On behalf of Dianne, Sylvia and Carole, and all Honor’s family a huge thank you for taking the time to come here today and remember a truly “one off” Grandma, fondly referred to as “Nan” & “Ma”.
I know Honor, you and I have shared many a cricket match either at a test or with an armchair supper. You’d be shaking your stick at me if I didn’t round off with something about leather and willow. So here’s a little favourite verse of mine that I hope you’ll like, my dear.
“There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night Ten to make and the match to win A bumping pitch and a blinding light, An hour to play, and the last man in. And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat. Or the selfish hope of a season's fame, But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote "Play up! Play up! And play the game!" “
Dear Honor, you always did just that bless you.
Thank you |

Dads Army Veteran Bill Pertwee MBE Book Signing Monday 30th November 2009
The team and guests at the Jubilee Inn were honoured when Bill Pertwee MBE (AKA Warden Hodges) attended a book signing in November of "The Making of a television legend - Dad's Army".
What made it special was a great turn out, especially from Shirley Bannard - School Assistant at Pelynt School - and a team of pupils arrived all dressed as land girls and in similar 1940's attire.
Taking the role of reporters the children asked Bill and our guests questions about the era. It's such a popular part of this years studies for them, as they can relate to that period, as many have grandparents who went through the WW2 years and some were evacuees. | | | | | | | | | |
