Charlie and Carole - Biography

Charlie & Carole Edgeler took up the tenancy of the Jubilee Inn in October 2007. “It is a really perfect country inn with everything!” was Charlie’s fist impressions. Having just completed four happy and successful years at the Norway Inn Perranarworthal near Truro for St Austell Brewery, it was time for a fresh challenge, nearer their home in Polperro. So they really have come home!

But their careers were not originally in the licensed trade, as between them they clocked up over 50 years in retail banking with Barclays Bank in London and the South East, finally managing a large area or 12 branches around Gatwick, Surrey & West Sussex where they met in 1997. Their destiny was carved out when the banking industry restructured and, although after a very happy first career, they were able to take up a lifetime ambition of running bespoke country inns.

After 3 years running the beautiful Tudor pub, the George & Dragon at Ightham in Kent for family brewers Shepherd Neame, Link Shepherd Neame they headed west, and after the hot summer of 2003 set out to be consultants to the trade and holding managers on a semi retired basis. Soon they were offered four weeks work holding the Norway Inn, which was a very good time. In fact so good that circumstances only a week after they had left led to St Austell Brewery, the family brewer of Cornwall, Link St Austell Brewery calling them to say “come back, we need more help and can you run the Norway for us full time?

So what started as a four week job finished with four fantastic years during which the Norway moved from success to success, winning a cluster of national and regional awards: And the role of honour has continued in January 2009 with the Jubilee Inn winning its first ever award - St Austell Brewery Tribute Awards Marketing Business of the Year 2008 followed by being Highly Commended in 2009 for Quality Accommodation and achieving the Jubilee Inn's first entry in the Good Beer Guide (CAMRA) in 2010. Standards continue and the Jubilee Inn appears again in the 2011 Good Beer Guide. In the meantime Visit England and Qualty in Tourism who assess accommodation, have awarded the Jubilee Inn "Four Star" accreditation.

During their management at the Norway Inn they were winners of the St Austell Brewery incentive for achievement three years running. This took Charlie & Carole, along with other winning couples on chance of a lifetime trips to the Waldorf New York, the Hilton Dubai and the Hotel Europe in St Petersburg.

To top all this Charlie & Carole were married in the beautiful church at Talland on 23rd September 2006. So when we say “they have come home” they really are as the parishes of Polperro, Lansallos, Talland and Pelynt are all joined under the leadership of our lovely presiding vicar then, the Reverend Linda Smith.

So that’s a bit about Charlie & Carole your hosts at the Jubilee Inn. But why carry on writing about them – come along to the Jubilee and say "hello" and experience the genuine warmth and friendliness that they and their team exude!!!
